The Great Roath Bake Off 2014

The Great Roath Bake Off 2014

The annual cake baking event is back for a fourth year and it promises to be bigger & better than previous years!
Preparations for the big day started way back in October to ensure this is The Greatest Roath Bake Off yet!
After the phenomenal success of last years Bake Off we had to raise the bar to make this event even more successful.
Team Bake Off have been busy recruiting entertainers, selecting judges and thinking up new ideas to make the Great Roath Bake Off a fun day out for everyone.

We decided after the enormous effort in the under 16's category last year to introduce The Great Roath Junior Bake Off. The standard of cakes & bakes by the under 16's last year was outstanding so we felt a bigger emphasis should be made of this category. We are hoping for another great turn out from the young Bakers in Roath.

We were also impressed with the amount of entries in the professional category last year. This is for professional cake makers/restaurants/bakers to enter what they would normally sell. This category seen entries not just from Roath but from all over Wales which highlighted just how popular this event had become.

In the general cake category we had just over one hundred entries last year! We assumed we would have had fifty entries at most but as the afternoon went on cake after cake was presented to us for judging. With a team of over ten judges it took nearly four hours to taste every cake and decide a winner. Each judge expressed how high the standard was in this category and praised the originality and presentation of each cake.

The Bake/Bread/Pie category will return also. This category seen some seriously amazing entries last year. Bill Wards pork pie was a favourite all day amongst judges and seemed right he won this category but the standard of bread and other pies was exceptionally high.

Apart from the baking we have an amazing line up of entertainment throughout the day.

We are honoured to have Beca Lyne Pirkis of Great British Bake Off fame join the judging panel. Beca will also answer some questions to the audience about her time on the hugely popular tv show and give baking tips to aspiring bakers.
We are so pleased to have Beca join us, ever since she appeared on the show people have been suggesting we approach her for an appearance at The Roath Bake Off and we were delighted she accepted our invitation and appreciate her taking time out of her busy schedule to be with us.

Britains Got Talent Finalist Nathan Wyburn will be creating something special for us on the day. Viewers will remember him from the ITV Talent Competition when he made a portrait of Michael Mcyntire from toast and marmite. We are overjoyed to have Nathan join the Bake Off and he's putting his sweet tooth to use and joining the judging panel too.

Musical entertainment will be organised by singer/songwriter Calum Ross. He has put together a fine line up of acts and we are extremely excited to announce that Ragsy from BBC1 Talent Show The Voice will be doing a set at The Bake Off. Currently enjoying success on the back of The Voice Ragsy will be performing tracks from his new EP. Again we are grateful that he has taken time out from his busy schedule to perform for us.
Joining Ragsy will be Ellie Makes Music and a special performance by Calum Ross & Tori Lang. Other performers will be announced closer to the date.

The judging panel will again be a mix of fabulously well know people from Television & Radio as well as professional food industry types. I'm so pleased that original judges Nikki, Sarah, Matt & Mariclare are returning as well as Owain Wynn Evans (BBC Weather Presenter) Dave Brooke's (Real Radio DJ) Chris Needs (BBC Wales) Sharron Mills & Nathan Wyburn. Also making a special guest appearance will be a very famous Celebrity Big Brother Contestant!!

Hosting the event will be Wayne Courtney. Wayne not only hosts but organises the event and overseas every aspect of the day. It's the fourth Bake Off he's hosted and is thrilled by its success. He works with a great team of volunteers who work tirelessly in the run up to the Bake Off. The team headed by Elaine Morris must organise the cakes into categories, present the cakes to the judges and tally all scores. Their dedication and hard work is amazing.

All proceeds from The Great Roath Bake Off will be split between A6 Acute Stroke Unit at UHW, A6 Trauma UHW and The Church Fund at St Andrews. The generosity from the shops and businesses in Roath help raise huge amounts every year at The Bake Off.
